Quick answer
Discord servers have three boost levels:
- Level 1 — 2 boosts
- Level 2 — 7 boosts
- Level 3 — 14 boosts
Each level keeps everything from the one before it and adds more. The biggest jumps are Level 2 (server banner, 1080p streaming, 50 MB uploads for everyone) and Level 3 (custom invite link, 100 MB uploads, 384 kbps audio).
Every perk, level by level

Level 1 — 2 boosts
The entry level is about personality: twice the emoji, more stickers and soundboard sounds, an animated server icon and a custom background on your invite page. Voice gets a small bump to 128 kbps and streams run at 60 fps.
Good for: small friend groups that want more emoji and a nicer-looking server.
Level 2 — 7 boosts
Level 2 is where a server starts to feel "premium": a server banner, custom role icons, 1080p 60fps streaming, 256 kbps audio, and a 50 MB upload limit for every member — even people without Nitro.
Good for: gaming communities, study groups and anyone who streams or shares clips.
Level 3 — 14 boosts
The top level adds the perk most servers boost for: a custom invite link like discord.gg/yourname. You also get 250 emoji slots, 60 stickers, 384 kbps audio, an animated banner and 100 MB uploads for everyone.
Good for: brands, creators and large communities that want a short, memorable invite. See how to get a vanity URL.
Additional perks (Server Tags, Role Styles)
Some newer perks don't come with a level — you unlock them by assigning boosts to them directly. Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles each need 3 dedicated boosts, and boosts assigned to a perk don't count toward your level.
- Server Tags (3 boosts) — a custom 4-character tag members can show on their profile everywhere on Discord.
- Enhanced Role Styles (3 boosts) — animated gradient and holographic role colours.
- Game Server Hosting (3 boosts).
- Larger File Uploads (5 boosts) — 250 MB uploads; currently an experiment on some servers.
So a server that wants Level 3 and Server Tags needs 17 boosts (14 + 3). Unlike levels, additional perks have no grace period — they switch off as soon as their boosts are removed. You can move boosts between levels and perks in your server's Boost panel on desktop.
What happens if boosts drop?
Boosts last as long as the booster keeps them. If your count falls below a level's requirement:
- You have a 72-hour grace period before that level's perks switch off.
- Emoji, stickers and sounds above the new limit stop working until you're back up — they aren't deleted.
- A custom invite link is lost, and becomes available to other servers after 30 days unless you get back to Level 3.
- Additional perks (Server Tags, Role Styles) switch off immediately — no grace period.
Tip: keep a buffer of one or two extra boosts above the level you depend on. Our Vanity Guard bot can also message you on Telegram the moment your count drops.
How many boosts do you actually need?
| You want… | Boosts |
|---|---|
| More emoji & an animated icon | 2 (Level 1) |
| A server banner or role icons | 7 (Level 2) |
| 50 MB uploads for every member | 7 (Level 2) |
| A custom invite link (discord.gg/name) | 14 (Level 3) |
| Level 3 + Server Tags | 17 |

Frequently asked questions
How many boosts do you need for Level 3 on Discord?
14 boosts. Level 1 needs 2 boosts and Level 2 needs 7.
Do more than 14 boosts unlock anything?
There's no Level 4, but extra boosts can unlock additional perks like Server Tags (3 boosts each) and act as a buffer so you don't drop below Level 3.
What happens when a server loses boosts?
There's a 72-hour grace period before the level's perks turn off. Emoji and stickers above the new limit stop working until you're back up.
Does Level 2 raise the upload limit for everyone?
Yes — at Level 2 every member can upload files up to 50 MB in your server, and at Level 3 up to 100 MB.
